On a hydraulic excavator or backhoe, the stick (also known as an arm or dipper stick) is the second section of the machine’s front attachment, connecting the boom to the bucket linkage. The stick determines the machine’s digging depth and reach, and is a critical component in the excavation, trenching and material handling cycle.
Sticks come in standard and long reach configurations. Standard sticks offer the best balance of digging force, depth and cycle speed for most general excavation work. Long sticks increase digging depth and reach for deep trenching, basement excavation, canal maintenance and slope grading, while trading some breakout force. The bucket cylinder, bucket linkage and hydraulic lines attach to the stick and may or may not be included when purchasing a used unit.
When purchasing a used stick, confirm compatibility with your excavator’s make, model and serial number, as stick length, pin dimensions and mounting geometry vary by model. Inspect for structural cracks, particularly at weld joints near the boom and bucket connection points. Check pin bore condition at both ends, and verify whether the unit includes associated components such as the bucket cylinder and linkage hardware.
