Long reach booms, also known as long fronts, are excavator attachments that provide extended reach for applications where the standard boom and stick configuration cannot reach far enough. Common applications include cleaning irrigation canals, drainage ditches, settling ponds, retention basins and waterway maintenance, as well as deep excavation, slope work and demolition at distance.
A long reach boom assembly typically replaces the excavator’s standard boom and stick with longer sections, along with modified hydraulic cylinders and lines. Reach distances vary from approximately 40 feet on smaller excavators to over 100 feet on large machines. Because of the extended reach, long reach booms are used with downsized buckets and lighter attachments to stay within the machine’s safe lifting capacity at full extension.
When shopping for a used long reach boom, match the boom to your excavator’s make, model and size class. Verify the boom-to-machine mounting dimensions, hydraulic cylinder specifications and the maximum bucket size rating. Inspect the boom structure for cracks, bending and pin bore wear, as long reach booms experience significant stress at the joints during operation.
