GRAPPLES
Grapples for heavy equipment are mechanical devices, available in a wide variety of configurations, that are used to grab, hold and release materials including logs, scrap metal, demolition debris, refuse, rock, brush, pipes and poles. They are used on excavators, skid steers, loader backhoes, track and wheel loaders, tractors, telehandlers, log loaders, log skidders, material handlers and cranes. Some grapples come with additional functions such as rotation, a chain saw, an electro-magnet, a scale or lifting device.
LOGGING
Log grapples come in several configurations. For swing machines such as log loaders and excavators, bypass style log grapples used in conjunction with a heel rack allow the grapple to close down on single or multiple stems while heeling the log from one end. Pulpwood grapples are typically used to handle a large number of small diameter logs grabbed in the center of the load. Butt-N-Top grapples are also used to grab logs in the center and incorporate outriggers to stabilize off-center loads. Log grapples mounted on wheel loaders, also known as log forks, include over arms or top clamps to help retain the load. For track and wheel skidders, log skidding grapples are mounted on the rear of the machine by means of a single function, dual function or swing boom arrangement.
DEMOLITION
Excavator mounted heavy duty demolition grapples aka demo grapples and contractor’s grapples are used in residential and industrial demolition, scrap and waste handling, rock handling and land clearing. Grapples typically come in 3 x 2 tine configurations and may also be available in 3 x 4 or 4 x 5 tine options.
SORTING
Excavator mounted sorting grapples are used to separate various types of material such as demolition debris, rubble, rock, broken concrete and the like. They are equipped with open-ribbed or skeleton type tines which permit the grapple to retain larger material while allowing small objects and fines to fall through the openings.
ORANGE PEEL
Orange Peel Grapples are equipped with multiple tines positioned like cut sections of a sliced orange peel. They are well suited for grabbing irregular shaped, stock-piled materials such as scrap metal, trash and refuse, demolition debris, wood and log sections. They are usually mounted on swing machines such as material handlers, excavators and cable cranes. Some orange peel grapples are equipped with electro-magnets (Magnet Grapples) which gives the grapple additional capabilities in ferrous scrap handling operations.
